The scenic city of Monte Sereno is nestled between the much larger town of Los Gatos, with which it shares parks, schools, a library, and police, and the city of Saratoga.
Monte Sereno includes about 4000 residents and notably, no office space, restaurants, or commercial property. Until recent years, there had been a little post office adjacent to the city offices, but the PO was shuttered awhile back. The stained glass window image that I’ve posted here is from that building that houses the city office and what was the post office.
All three of these pretty and upscale communities sit at the base of the Santa Cruz Mountains, often called the Los Gatos Mountains there. The beautiful hills are filled with trees, particularly redwoods, and are green year round.
Monte Sereno homes & neighborhoods
Homes in Monte Sereno range from a few very young, attached homes to modest ranch style single family homes all the way to gargantuan luxury properties on several acres – this is some of the most expensive real estate in Santa Clara County. (The largest I ever saw was about 20,000 SF.)
Just off of Winchester Boulevard, you’ll find some classic, beautifully maintained Eichler homes.
The site of the old Hacienda Inn & Restaurant is new duet homes and townhouses by Summerhill.
Most neighborhoods, though, feature nicely updated homes of a good size, anywhere from 2,000 to 5,000 SF on average. Often they are understated ranch style homes.
Homes in Monte Sereno often enjoy views of the hills, but sometimes may boast valley views if in a hillside or hilltop location. In a few areas, there are parcels or entire neighborhoods zoned for horses, such as the Loma Serena area off of Daves Avenue. (Read about the Loma Serena neighborhood on my Live in Los Gatos blog.)
Monte Sereno schools
Schools in Santa Clara County do not neatly follow city or zip code boundaries, as those school lines were drawn long before many areas in the valley became incorporated.
Monte Sereno schools are mostly part of the Los Gatos Union School District and the Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District. There is a pocket of homes which are part of the Campbell Union School District and the Campbell Union High School District. (Something truly odd is that within that pocket, there are 2 houses – surrounded by Campbell schools – which are a part of the Los Gatos Union School District instead. I heard from a Realtor friend who had listed one of those properties for sale that when the land was sold for development, there was an exception that these two properties be in the other school district.)
